The Golden Delicious has for decades been one of the most important apple varieties in the world. Sweetly aromatic from a tree with high yields, it originated in West Virginia but has been grown all over the world since the mid-20th century.
Due predominantly to high and consistent yields, Golden Delicious is a favourite with apple growers and its genetic material is present in many commercially available varieties with the popular Elstar, Jonagold and Gala among its offspring.
The fruits are greenish, become creamy yellow as they ripen and can take on a slightly red hue on the sun side, but without developing red stripes. They are medium to large in size and have a sweet aroma and faint aniseed flavour when fully ripe. Golden Delicious have low acidity and keep well.
